Major Barratt Hamilton was a biologist, researching whale biology at Leith, when he died of a heart attack. His body was repatriated to Ireland, via England, on the Orwell. This memorial was placed in the Grytviken church in 2005 to replace an earlier marble plaque that has gone missing from the cemetery at Leith. Read more about him on Wikipedia

He was buried on 2 March 1914 at All Saints Church, Duncannon, Co. Wexford, Ireland. (Thanks to Ivan Ward the churchwarden for this information, and photographs)

The wording on the grave surround is:

On the Grave, facing North is “Gerald Edwin Hamilton Barrett-Hamilton Major Royal Irish Rifles. Be thou faithful unto death, I will give thee a crown of life. Rev 2, 10”
Facing East ” At South Georgia Jan 14th 1914 in his 42nd year”
On the Cross in the Centre “In loving Memory   I thank my God upon every rememberance of you”
