CABRIAL, Frank

Cabrial occupies the earliest known grave on the island. He was the steward of the brig Frances Allen of New London and drowned.

Cabrial Rock on the north side of Ocean Harbour was named after him by the South Georgia Surveys in the 1950s.

In his 1931 book South Georgia The British Empire’s Subantarctic Outpost, L Harrison Matthews describes a grave at New Fortune Bay, “marked by a wooden cross on which is carved the inscription:”

Note: Some sources, eg R K Headland, spell his name Cabriel. Noting that the vessel name Francis Allen is mis-spelled on the cross, and must have been the primary source, an open mind should be kept on spellings.
