The Register of Deaths tells us that he committed suicide. Might this be linked to the location of the grave – right in the corner of the cemetery, out of chronological order of burials? At this time other burials were taking place in row ‘C’, where there would have been room. In some places there has been a tradition of not burying suicides in consecrated graveyards, a practice halted by law in the UK in 1822. This grave might even have been outside the cemetery fenceline at the time.
