The South Georgia Museum’s Whalers’ Memory Bank Project has unearthed a new photograph from the collection donated by the family of Jock Murray. The image shows the funeral procession carrying the coffin towards the cemetery.
The recorded caption is “Swannie Plumber. A very sad day. Taking Alex Hasnain to Rest.”
There was only one death at Leith during the 1959-60 summer (and the lack of snow shows that it is late summer) so we suspect that this is a misinterpretation of a handwritten note on the back of the photograph, and should actually read 1960 and Alex Macnair.
