21 of the crew survived, including the British Fisheries Observer, but sadly 17 died.
The story of the sinking is told on the book ‘Last Man Off‘ by the fisheries observer Matt Lewis, who was on board at the time.
There are two memorials to the 17 victims. This one is in the Grytviken church. The other is a cross on the hillside above the cemetery. Both were constructed at the time by members of the British military garrison who were stationed on South Georgia at the time, and looked after the survivors (and bodies of the others) until they were repatriated.
The church memorial is comprised of a ship’s lifebelt, from the Sudur Havid, and a brass plaque listing the names of the men who died.
